"My background is largely in Sales, having established leading product brands from just an idea.
I entered the Chemical Industry by chance. Usual reason, I needed a job.
As is often the case at key points in life, I was privileged to meet and work with some talented people who were willing to invest their experience and skills in me.
The result has been a thirty year period of hard but satisfying work. I found out very early in my career that being a commodity salesman was not the future for me. I wanted to specialise and prove of added value to the people I worked with. I went on to become an EU Specialist in all aspects of Metal, Plastics and Electronics cleaning in industries like aerospace.
I have been privileged to serve my industry through Committee with the Chemical Business Association within the UK. Like most people, since I was presenting solutions every day to companies seeking to meet regulatory needs, it seemed to me I had a reasonable understanding of the power and value of marketing to increase sales revenue. Like most people, I was wrong!
Today I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. I achieved Chartered Marketer accreditation in 2008. I act for the Chartered Institute of Marketing as Ambassador for SMEs in Yorkshire and the North East.
I suspect that my sales background helped me with my marketing skills.
In simple terms, marketing is understanding a need, introducing a solution in a clear way and attracting an audience to test the claim for themselves. If the claim is accurate, highly satisfied customers result.
The key is getting a return on your investment, in order to keep investing.
A combination of sales and marketing skills, fused together, will always deliver more.
Never mistake the importance of Branding for your products and services. If you know what makes you bigger and better, it won’t be remembered unless you tell people.
Even with minimal marketing budgets the outcomes can bring growth, controlled by your personal objectives.
